Types of therapy offered & philosophy I work with the full range of mental health issues including: depression, anxiety, stress, life transitions, grief/loss. I specialize in couples work – marriage, separations, divorce counseling. In 2006 I wrote and published Taking Space – How To Use Separation To Explore The Future Of Your Relationship that as of 2010 has sold 5,000 copies and is winner of 2007 Independent Publisher’s Award. This is a 10 Step Problem Solving Guide for couples considering or going through a separation. I expand the concept of separations to include: in-house, brief, trial, pre-divorce, psychological, therapeutic, etc. which allows many more options for couples. The emphasis is on using the energy and conflict of separation to grow and develop as an individual. I also have a Couples Home Study course for struggling couples, separations and affair recovery and reconciliation (with 9 CDs, workbook, separation agreement template). My website has a variety of DVDs, CDs, my blog and newsletter and will continue to offer more psycho-educational materials and courses for relationships.
My treatment philosophy is client-centered with emphasis on a strong therapeutic relationship. I use Cognitive-behavioral, Emotionally Focused, Transactional Analysis, Psychodynamic therapies along with psycho-educational training and coaching for couples work.
I have been psychotherapist/counselor for over 30 years. I received a BA in psychology from The University of Rhode Island in 1968 and a Master of Social Work (MSW) from Ohio State University in 1970. I am licensed in the state of Vermont and have a Diplomate from the National Association of Social Workers. I was chief social worker at the US Army Hospital in Seoul, S Korea from 1971-72. Executive Director with the West Yavapai Guidance Center from 1972-76. I taught at Vermont College/Norwich University 1976-78 and have been in private practice in Vermont since 1978. I have done professional training for the American Humane Association – Children’s Division and Action for Child Protection with social workers on building relationships, assessment and treatment with families. I am a founding parent of Central Vermont Hospice and continue to train volunteers in communication skills. I do a staff development and communication skills training for organizations. I have presented workshops on couples’ issues for the national Smart Marriages annual conference, the International Transactional Analysis Association, and NASW – VT Chapter.
